I’ve lost track of the number of times senior men and women have told me they felt it was okay to lie about age in their online dating profiles. If I had to give a percentage to seniors who believe...
No Date On Valentine's Day?
By Ken Solin
To make it short, the answer to the title of this article is: “No problem”. But in truth, not many feelings equal the emptiness a single can feel if they don’t have a date on Valentine's Day. There’s a huge mountain of hyperbole around that day that’s impossible for a single senior to ignore if they don’t have a date.
Mostly a Commercial Holiday
Unfortunately, some dateless seniors feel there’s something wrong with them, and while this isn’t true, this holiday has become greatly overblown in terms of its relevance. It’s a grudging tribute to the success of candy makers, greeting card companies, florists, and writers who feel it’s their duty to make singles without a date feel like misfits.
Hearts hang in store windows everywhere, and I remember how these symbols made me feel when I didn’t have a date. I felt lonely, and there was a visceral response to the symbols that start appearing a week or more before the actual holiday.
The following tips will help you understand why VDay is actually an amazing opportunity to meet someone special.
Online Dating Sites Are the Answer
Go online and begin looking for potential dates to contact, and since nearly all dating site let other daters see when members are online, their online status is a likely sign they don’t have a Valentine's Day date either. Send an email and if you like what you receive in return, suggest a phone conversation. All this correspondence can occur in a short span of time.
Take It With Humor!
Talking with another single senior on this holiday is a terrific plan. You’ll likely discover that instead of commiserating with each other about being dateless, you’ll both see the humor in this situation. A coffee date might even follow.
Just Have Fun
Just look for a friend on Valentine's Day. Forget about finding a potential partner and enjoy yourself without any sense of obligation. You’ll discover that chatting with a Valentine's Day single will make a day typically marked by flowers and romance, humorous instead.
But don’t lose sight of the fact that Valentine’s Day without a date is a less than subtle reminder that it’s time to get more involved in the senior online dating community. If you haven’t been online in ages your profile needs refreshing. Most seniors experience life changes, and even subtle differences should be reflected in your revised profile. Consider refreshing your user name, too.
Have you subscribed to season tickets to the opera, theater, sporting events, or any other type of activity for which you’ve signed up since your last profile update? Most people who buy season tickets to events purchase two. If that’s your situation then mention you have tickets to the opera and that you’d enjoy sharing this special event with a fellow enthusiast. You might be surprised by how many responses you get. Consider taking a date to an event a potentially wonderful evening and don’t reproach yourself for giving a ticket away. Generosity of spirit is a quality that every senior respects and admires.
Keep Your Profile Updated
You might also want to mention other types of life changes; a new career path, a volunteer activity, classes you’re taking, a new sport you’re playing, a local theater group you’ve joined, or any type of interest that other singles might find appealing. Keeping in mind that the more alike two people are the better their chances for a successful relationship, sharing your passion with someone equally enthusiastic is smart dating.
Show Your Best Side on Photos
Delete photos more than a year old and replace them with a few headshots. And don’t forget to smile because you’ll appear happy and attractive. Also, add at least one full body photo if you haven’t already.
Valentine's Day clearly doesn’t have to be a disaster simply because you don’t have a date. It’s a reminder that this is the perfect time to re-engage in the online dating world. And I suggest single seniors be proactive rather than waiting for their inboxes to fill up. You’ll be more successful when you do the selecting. Good luck on your search.
