Online Dating Etiquette: A Do and Don’t Guide for Men and Women
By Nida Sea
Do you know the best manners to have when using online dating sites? If you’re new to online dating, you’ll want to know the appropriate online dating etiquette that will help you get recognized and score dates. But, not all online dating etiquette is the same for men and women. This “Do's and Don’ts" guide has the online dating manners for both men and women, and the best ways to use them.
Online dating etiquette for women
Don’t show too much skin! You want to be recognized for your beauty of course, but not for your slutty ways. These kinds of photos only attract the wrong men, which leads to poor relationships and short-lived encounters.
Do dress correctly. Spice up your photos with appropriate fitting clothing. It’s all right to show off your femininity, but real guys like a modest girl, not a slutty one. Use photos that have the right lighting for the mood.
Don’t exaggerate yourself. Nothing ruins appropriate online dating etiquette than a lie. If your body isn’t model perfect in real life, then don’t pretend it is online. Sooner or later, you’re going to meet one of these men in person, what do you think they’ll think when they discover you haven’t been honest with them initially?
Do be yourself and post photos of the real you. Avoid photo-shopping yourself, which is all too common now, and pose naturally. Smile as if you mean it, and add flair to the photo by showing what you like. E.g., hobbies or sports.
Don’t connect with every guy you meet. This is a serious security issue, especially if you use Facebook to connect with singles. Connecting with men you’ve met from online dating sites can increase your risk for dangers and even becoming stalked.
Do wait until you know him better. Usually after dating in person for a while is best. You want to know that this guy can be trusted on your Facebook page. When you’ve reached that level of trust, then it’s OK to add him.
Online dating etiquette for men
Don’t make a hate list. So you hate chick flicks, opera, and vegetarians, and you blatantly state on your profile that you have absolutely no interest in women with these kinds of tastes! Come on guys, girls don’t want to know about everything you hate. It’s a quick turn off to women, and they won’t give you a second chance.
Do make a list of things that interest you. Specifically speaking, things you would be interested in doing with another person. Going bowling, dancing, or a walk in the park. Online dating etiquette is about being polite to gain more attention, not chasing it away so you never get any attention.
Don’t be rude. You come off as lewd and perverted in a chat room because of the way you talk. Or, you casually curse ever other word. You have it set deep in your mind that is the way you talk, and if she doesn’t like it, well screw her.
Do use the right language. There really is no need to use curse words or lewd comments to get your point across. A thoughtful, respectable guy will carefully think about his response to a woman before answering. Besides, you can get to the dirty talk when you two are comfortable enough with each other.
Don’t exaggerate your lifestyle. This is worse than lying about your appearance. So you claim in your profile you make over $100,000 a year, you drive a sporty car, and you live in a large mansion with a pool. Seriously, guys, any smart girl will easily read through these lies.
Do be honest about your lifestyle. If there is something you don’t want to reveal just yet, then don’t. Real women won’t ask how much you make, only gold diggers do that. Real women want to know you, and what you’re like, not how much money you make or the car you drive (But having a comfortable, normal lifestyle doesn’t hurt!).
To make this guide even easier to use, just be yourself. You want to date someone who likes you, for you, not for what you dress up in your profile.
