Are Dating Sites Appropriate for Christians?
By: Johanna Braun
At the heart of Christianity is faith. It's what our belief is centered around, and it’s a belief and certainty in what we cannot see. What do the stories of the Bible center around? Faith. From Genesis to Revelations, we find men and women who, by faith, saw amazing things happen. In chapter 11 of Hebrews, we’re even reminded of the great heroes of faith from Abel to Moses to Noah.
By faith, Abraham went into a land he didn't know to collect an inheritance, and he did it simply because God had told him so. By faith, Sarah conceived the promised son that would end up producing the lineage of Jesus. By faith, Moses led the people of Israel out of Egypt, and it serves as a powerful metaphor for our own release from spiritual slavery and into the freedom of God’s grace.
So, to put it mildly, God evidently likes faith. So, now you’re probably wondering, What does faith have to do with my Christian dating life?
Faith and Christian Singles Dating
To live a life of faith, you must first ask what God is saying to you. Then, you have to take action. Have faith that God will lead, guide, and direct you just as the Bible says He will. I've found that the best approach is to go in with no expectations as to whether or not someone is "the one." Just get to know people.
Go online? Sure. Go on dates? Sure. But before that, decide to seek God, read the Bible, and pray in all other areas of life. And just as He leads and guides you in every other area, He will do so in this one, too. It might take a while to meet the right person, and there might be bumps along the way, but these will be learning and growing experiences. Know that in the end, God is faithful to lead and guide you to the right decision in this area as in all other areas.
As for the question of whether or not to go online, just think about the many things that are accomplished on the internet today. Today, I set up a doctor's appointment, contacted my family in America and Italy, paid a few bills, bought plane tickets, and am now writing this article. Without even getting up from my chair. All online.
Isaac and Rebekah: A Love Story
In the Bible, Abraham sent his servant to go find Rebekah for his son Isaac. If they had had the internet back then, maybe Abraham would have posted Isaac’s profile on JDate or something. But that’s just not the case, so Abraham sent a servant to find a wife for Isaac.
What’s interesting is that this servant trusted God to reveal the right woman based on a simple sign: The woman wouldn’t just offer him water to drink; she would also provide water to his camels. The servant asked God to lead and direct him, and he rested in the faith of knowing that he would find God’s intended bride for Isaac.
Most of us don’t have camels waiting in our backyards, but what if we went online today and prayed that God would show us the right person as well? It must be easier than adding camels into the equation. Maybe.
One thing we know for sure is that faith pleases God. He said so in the aforementioned chapter of Hebrews. So, if we take a step of faith and decide to trust God with our online dating life, we will be in good hands, and the results will turn out well. Why? Because we have faith that God is good and will bring about the best result.
