What your Halloween Costume Says About You
By Erika Ettin
A few weeks ago, I talked about what to wear and what not to wear on a first date. While that is obviously extremely important, there are, of course, other times besides the first date when you have to ask yourself the question, “What the heck am I supposed to wear?”
We all know what holiday is coming up on October 31st. Believe it or not, the costume you wear says a lot about who you are. For example, I used to wear this ridiculous homemade “costume” that was made of a cereal box and a fake knife (tin foil) pierced through it. What was I? A cereal killer. In other years, I was a “sexy bee.” (That’s actually how the costume was advertised online.) Through both of those costumes, you’d get a very different impression of who I really am. For that reason, I want to talk about this:
What does your Halloween costume really say about you?
1. The “sexy” [fill in the blank]
I’ve learned over the years that pretty much anything can be turned into the sexy version of itself. Sexy nurse, sexy teacher, sexy hockey player… it really doesn’t matter. By dressing as the sexy version of something, it often says that you either want to show off what you have and this is the one time of year that it’s socially acceptable (that was my reason anyway) or, more likely, that you’re looking for attention. If you leave nothing to the imagination, for better or worse, people are going to look at you.
2. The pun
Like my silly cereal costume, a punny costume shows that you enjoy wit and wordplay. I personally enjoy these types of costumes the most because, just like in an online dating username that takes a clever take on a word, a clever costume is a fairly decent proxy for intelligence.
3. The last-minute throw together
You throw on a pair of sunglasses and say you’re a lifeguard. You decide to wear a hat and say you’re a cowboy. You put a “Hello my name is Larry” nametag on and say you’re one of the Three Stooges. We can all see through these costumes (not literally like in #1, thank goodness), and the only thing most people think is, “This person is lazy.”
4. The scary/gory number
To be perfectly honest, I hate these costumes. Most come with a mask so you can’t even see the costume-wearer’s face. This screams (no pun intended) that this person doesn’t really want to engage with people at the party. The mask creates a barrier so that it’s really easy to disengage.
5. The “In” joke
Like the pun costume, this person is in the know with the news. If the whole "dress" fiasco had occurred on Halloween, you better believe we would have seen a lot of white/gold and blue/black action going on. Now, on the other hand, if someone shows up in an outdated news story costume, he or she is likely to get a few eye rolls for being so far removed from the present day.
6.The big box
We’ve all seen those costumes where someone is wearing a big cardboard box—a Martian, a dinosaur, a box of candy, an iPad, a phone booth. I don’t care what it is—you’re in my way. Wearing a huge box to a party is the kiss of death. You get in everyone’s way, and you can’t really get close to people. Don’t do it.
